What if I am on my period? Can I still attend my scheduled pelvic health physiotherapy appointment?
Yes! We can assess/treat your pelvic floor even if you are on your period. In fact, it can be helpful to be seen on your period if you notice your symptoms are related to your menstrual cycle.
What if I don't want to have an internal pelvic exam?
Not having an internal pelvic exam is always an option, and entirely dependent on the comfort level of a client! While internal work is valuable, our therapists can provide a variety of external supports, including: external techniques, patient education and take home programs.
Should I cancel my physiotherapy appointment if I am in a pain flare?
No! During a flare, your therapist can gain valuable insight into what is causing your pain. Your therapist will modify treatment approaches to ensure that you feel as comfortable as possible during treatment.
How many sessions will I require?
Pelvic health physiotherapy is not a “one-size-fits-all” approach, and therefore looks different for each client that walks through the door. Your therapist will discuss what could work best for you and together, you will come up with a collaborative treatment plan for moving forward. A typical treatment plan would be 4-6 appointments.
Are your therapists trauma informed?
Yes, all of our therapists are trained in physical and sexual trauma and can perform assessments and treatments that you feel comfortable with. Any trauma history that you disclose will be handled with care and respect. Please let your therapist know if you have triggers, no-go zones, or anything else that we can accommodate. Internal exams for pelvic health physiotherapy are helpful but not required. This is not a “no pain, no gain” environment.
Will it be covered by insurance?
Private physiotherapy treatment is not covered under the provincial health plan in Nova Scotia (MSI). However, most private insurance companies cover private physiotherapy treatments. Please check with your health insurance provider (for instance, Medavie Blue Cross, Great West Life, SunLife, RWAM, etc.) regarding your coverage.
We provide you with a detailed receipt that includes your therapist’s registration number. You may then submit this receipt to your insurance company to be reimbursed for your visit.
Do I need a doctor’s referral?
No physician’s referral is needed to access our services. However, some private insurance companies require a physician’s referral to be compensated for treatment. Please check with your private insurer for their requirements.
Can I bring my baby with me?
Yes, you most certainly can! We want all our clients to feel comfortable and supported during their visits, whether they’re receiving treatment or caring for their little ones. We have multiple clinical support staff who are able to help care for your little one, if required, during your treatment. We also have designated areas in our clinic where you can feed and change your baby.
What should I expect from my first assessment and visit?
During your first visit, your therapist will ask about your symptoms and medical history. They will then proceed with an objective physical assessment that may include an internal or external exam. This can look different for every client, and will depend on your symptoms and comfort level. Before finishing your appointment, you and your therapist will discuss a collaborative treatment plan for moving forward! Initial assessments are 60 minutes.
What if I need to cancel my appointment?
It is understandable that some appointments may need to be rescheduled or cancelled. Our cancellation policy is easy to maintain and simple to remember: we only require 24 hours notice. Your appointment time is reserved just for you. A late cancellation or missed visit leaves a hole in the therapists’ day that could have been filled by another patient. Any appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice will be subject to a $30 fee. Cancellations are accepted via email, text or voicemail. Last minute cancellations directly affect your therapist’s earnings for the day, so we truly appreciate ample time to try to fill your spot.
